The Foundational Framework: The Four Noble Truths (Arya Satyani)

This is the cornerstone of all Buddhist teaching, a diagnosis and prescription for the human condition.

1. The Truth of Suffering (Dukkha)

  • Definition: Dukkha is often translated as “suffering,” but its meaning is broader: unsatisfactoriness, stress, insecurity, imperfection.
  • Three Levels:
    1. Ordinary Suffering: Physical and mental pain (birth, sickness, old age, death).
    2. Suffering of Change: The anxiety that arises because pleasant experiences are impermanent. Happiness turns to sorrow.
    3. All-Pervasive Suffering: The subtle, underlying unease of conditioned existence—the fact that we are bound to a body and mind subject to causes and conditions we cannot fully control.
  • Key Insight: To deny dukkha is to live in delusion. Acknowledging it is the first step to liberation.

2. The Truth of the Origin of Suffering (Samudaya)

  • The Cause: Suffering originates in “thirst” or craving (Tanha).
  • Three Types of Craving:
    1. Craving for Sensual Pleasure (Kama-tanha): Desire for pleasant sights, sounds, tastes, etc.
    2. Craving for Existence/Becoming (Bhava-tanha): The desire to be something, to continue, to assert identity.
    3. Craving for Non-Existence (Vibhava-tanha): The desire for annihilation, to escape, to not be.
  • Root Cause: Craving itself is fueled by a deeper ignorance (Avidya)—a fundamental misunderstanding of reality. We crave because we believe in a permanent, independent “Self” that needs to be satisfied and protected.

3. The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha)

  • The Goal: It is possible to completely extinguish (nirodha) craving and thus achieve the cessation of dukkha. This state is Nirvana (Nibbana).
  • Definition of Nirvana: The “unconditioned” state, the extinguishing of the fires of greed, hatred, and delusion. It is not a heavenly realm but a psychological and existential freedom realized in this life. It is beyond all concepts of existence and non-existence.

4. The Truth of the Path to the Cessation of Suffering (Magga)

  • The Prescription: The way to end craving and achieve Nirvana is by following the Noble Eightfold Path (Magga).
