The Ultimate Goal
The Ultimate Goal: Nirvana (Nibbana)
- Etymology: “Extinguishing” (as of a flame). The extinguishing of the Three Poisons—Greed (raga), Hatred (dvesha), and Delusion (moha)—which fuel the cycle of rebirth.
- What it is NOT: It is not annihilation of a self (since there is no self to annihilate), nor is it a heaven-like paradise.
- What it IS: The unconditioned state, the end of suffering, the ultimate peace and freedom. It is realized in this very life by the Arahat (the liberated one), who upon physical death enters Parinirvana—final nirvana, with no further rebirth.
